Armistice Bay
Group Project: Hannah Jones, McKinley Leavitt

Our design team was tasked to design the community space, support services, and exterior patio in a permanent affordable supportive housing complex located conveniently next to Skid Row in Los Angeles, CA. Our location for this building gives the homeless the perfect opportunity to find shelter and safety right across the bridge from Skid Row is the most homeless area in LA. Our new building will represent growth while it is conveniently located next to public transportation, hospitals, schools, and parks to be utilized by the users of the permanent supportive housing complex. The users of this building will be United States Veterans from all branches of the military.

When creating a space for these homeless veterans we aimed for it to be a warm and inviting space that will make anyone feel right at home—encompassing the outdoors and natural elements to bring the outdoors in while still remaining sustainable. This permanent housing facility for veterans will help push them toward the right track of standing on their feet again and regaining their self-identity. With ample social spaces as well as private areas for health support this is the perfect place to call home.

How we came up with the name:

Armistice Day was the original name for veterans day. Armistice means an agreement in war to call a truce, which is a great connection to the military and the veterans that will be staying in the Armistice Bay. A bay is typically a quiet and secure body of water, which is exactly what we want in our supportive housing unit.

Apartment Typical- Individual

Supportive housing units are essential for recovery, personal growth, and change in those who have suffered traumatic events. Many veterans end up homeless with no one to return to after deployment. Creating a supportive housing unit where veterans can come and stay for as long as they please while working on themselves and getting the help they need is the least we can do for those who have put their lives in danger while serving our country. Armasits Bay recognizes that veterans come with many disabilities. That is why Armasits bay focuses on incorporating many accessible and sustainable furniture and fixture options. Our main goal is to promote social encounters to help the healing process. While keeping sustainability in mind to preserve our environment and keep Armasits Bay around for generations to come.
